Obtaining Naturalization
Having the same rights and duties as Brazilian citizens is a great advantage for those who want to settle in Brazil, in addition to not needing a visa in the 153 countries and territories where Brazilians are exempt from it. In addition, foreigners may compete for public tenders in Brazil.
The Brazilian Constitution provides in article 12, item II on the granting of Brazilian nationality:
“Art. 12. Are Brazilians:
II - naturalized:
Those who, in accordance with the law, acquire Brazilian nationality, required from Portuguese-speaking countries only residence for one uninterrupted year and moral integrity;
Foreigners of any nationality residing in the Federative Republic of Brazil for more than fifteen years uninterruptedly and without criminal conviction, provided that they apply for Brazilian nationality”.
It is important to note that naturalization and nationality are different, since a person can have more than one nationality. Thus, nationality refers to the country of birth or the country of citizenship in accordance with the conditions and laws of a given country.
